UTO Sunday February 5th: Giving Thanks for Daily Blessings The United Thank Offering (UTO) is a ministry of The Episcopal Church for the mission of the whole church. Through United Thank Offering, men, women, and children nurture the habit of giving daily thanks to God. These prayers of thanksgiving start when we recognize and name our many daily blessings. Those who participate in UTO discover that thankfulness leads to generosity. United Thank Offering is entrusted to promote thank offerings, to receive the offerings, and to distribute the UTO monies to support mission and ministry throughout The Episcopal Church and in invited Provinces of the Anglican Communion in the developing world. Please find the enclosed UTO envelope to use for your contribution on UTO Sunday Feb. 5. Blue Boxes are available at the entrances of our church to use during the year as you offer thanks for your daily blessings.
‘MEET’ THE NEW HEATING SYSTEM Now that our new heating system is installed and operating and the cosmetic repairs are complete, we want everyone to see the results of our Campaign for Warmth. Your generous contributions and pledges have made all of this possible. On Sunday, February 5, after both the 8:00 and 10:30 services, members are invited to tour the boiler room and Sunday school area to admire the work that has been done. Rick Talmage and Tommie Elder will be our tour guides. February 21- Shrove Tuesday Pancake Supper
Wednesday, February 22 - Noon and 5:30 p.m. Ash Wednesday marks the beginning of the special church season of Lent. We start this season with the mark of ashes upon our foreheads to indicate our admission of sin and to be reminded that we are mortal and to dust we shall return. Ash Wednesday is also one of two fast days in the Episcopal Church. (The other is Good Friday.) Make a good start to the Lenten season by attending church at noon or 5:30 p.m.
MINISTRY FAIR On Sunday, February 26, after the 8:00 service, during the Sunday school hour and after the 10:30 service, tables will be set up in the Parish Hall to advertise and promote all the many and varied ministries offered at Christ and Grace. You will have the opportunity to learn about and sign up to participate in the ministries of your choice. We always need and desire more people to help in all aspects of our life together. Plan to attend on this special Sunday.
Celtic Service Please join us for our next Celtic Evensong and Communion Service on Sunday, February 19th. Harpist Louise Daniel will be the featured musician. Pre-service music begins at 5:15 p.m. and the service begins at 5:30. As always, child care is provided and casual dress is encouraged. Please bring a friend and plan to stay for the reception that follows the service.
EXPERIENCE THE DIVINE Tuesdays during Lent, beginning on February 28, at 5:30 p.m., you are invited to a 45-minute session set aside for listening to God and being in God’s presence. Participants will sit in comfortable chairs in the upstairs Guild Room. In the first 15 minutes, anyone who wishes may share something he or she believes was an expression of the Divine. It could be an Aha! moment and can occur through any number of avenues: something in nature, a word of scripture or other written materials, music, dreams, a sudden insight, a picture, another’s voice, an experience or encounter.
After this sharing time, we will spend the remaining 30 minutes or so being quiet trying to still our minds so as to open our hearts to God’s presence within us. If you haven’t ever tried this form of contemplative prayer, there will be some simple suggestions offered to help make the period of silence more meaningful. (The concept of this service emerged from our strategic planning process.)
The Lenten Speaker/Luncheon Series begins Tuesday, February 28 The Rev. Dr. Keith R. Emerson, Rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Suffolk, will be the first Lenten speaker. Keith and David were in seminary together.
Lenten Potluck/ Movie Nights During our season of Lent, we have Wednesday night potluck/movie night beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesdays, February 29 through March 28. Our movie this year is Walking Across Egypt, starring Ellen Burstyn. This movie is described as a warm family drama. We will watch approximately 15-20 minutes each night after sharing a potluck meal. All ages are welcome and encouraged to attend.
About the movie: Mattie (Burstyn) is an aging southern belle who realizes that she's getting too old to go on living in a house. After an odd encounter with the local dogcatcher, Lamar (Mark Hamill), Mattie befriends Lamar's bad-egg nephew, Wesley (Jonathan Taylor Thomas).
